5 apps to gift to food lovers this Christmas | MNN

An inexpensive, thoughtful gift for the food lover in your life is an app that has something to do with that person’s particular interests. If you want to gift an app to someone who lives far away or print out the redemption code to stick it in someone’s stocking, here are a variety of food apps to choose from this holiday season.

1. How to Cook Everything – For $9.99 for iPhones or iPads, you get the complete text of Mark Bittman’s indispensible (in my opinion) cookbook along with many features the paper version can’t have like the ability to email yourself grocery lists or email full recipes to friends. There is also an app for Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything Vegetarian” cookbook.

2. Green Kitchen – Ninety-six healthy vegetarian recipes are on this $4.99 app available for iPhone and iPad. The recipes use a bare minimum of gluten, dairy and sugar, and many are vegan, raw, gluten free, sugar free or whole grain.

3. Nom Nom Paleo – I asked my Facebook friends which food apps they’d be willing to gift, and someone recommended this app that’s $5.99 for the iPad. She says it’s pretty expensive, but her family that follows a paleo lifestyle uses it a lot.

4. Cook4Lyfe – This app recommends recipes based on what foods you already have in your pantry and refrigerator to help save money and reduce food waste. It’s also a great tool if you want to use the ingredients that you have on hand instead of running to the store. It’s $1.99 for Apple devices and contains recipes from popular food bloggers, magazines, and cookbooks.

5. Paprika Recipe Manager – Managing recipes you found on the web is easy with this app. This one works on iPhones, iPads, Kindles, Nooks, Android devices, and Macs and has cloud sync so you can manage recipes on your laptop, cook them with your tablet in the kitchen, and access them from your smartphone at the grocery store to get ingredients. It’s $4.99 for mobile devices and $19.99 for the Mac app. I haven’t tried it yet, but it gets such rave reviews that I’m tempted to buy it for myself.

Do you know of any food apps that would make great Christmas gifts that should be added to this list?
