The nuclear reactor facility in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic exploded twenty three years ago and the place is still a wasteland. Supposedly thirty people died in the initial explosion, but the number of deaths from cancer caused by the release of the radiation is more likely to be in the thousands. And more recently on 3/11/11 the Fukishima Nuclear facility was hit by an 9.0 earthquake according to the USGS. Three reactors were shut down for maintenance and the remaining three were terminated just after the earthquake. Immediately following the earthquake a 46 foot tsunami struck the facility and flooded the backup generators rendering them useless, resulting in partial core meltdowns and hydrogen explosions. The effects of the Fukishima disaster will prevail for decades if not centuries if they do not entomb the reactors now.
